Biography:

Walter Pijls (1975) has been CEO of the Brightlands Smart Services Campus in Heerlen since 2024. As a born Limburger, he combines regional involvement with an international vision of innovation. With a background in commercial electrical engineering and an Executive MBA from both RWTH Aachen University and the University of St. Gallen, Pijls spent more than 20 years at Ford Research and Advanced Engineering Europe. Here he has built up his expertise in digital ecosystems and innovation management. At the Brightlands Smart Services Campus, Pijls focuses on the development of the campus as an international junction for people-oriented AI solutions, digitization and data science. Here startups, companies, organizations and knowledge institutions work together and digital solutions are being developed that make society safer, fairer and more sustainable.
